How Other Countries contributed to this holiday
(last updated on 12/11/09)
The first celebration of Yule actually started in Egypt. It was the celebration of the rebirth of Horus. Because the Egyptian calendar is based on 12 months, the holiday lasts 12 days, with each day representing 1 month. The Babylonians caught on to the idea and called it Zagmuk. They were the original gift givers.
Greece: The Yule Log
Norse: Santa Claus originated from Odin, the sleigh (Freya)
Evergreens and bells were used to chase away evil spirits
Possible Origins for the Word "Yule"

meaning wheel
Germanic: Yula, meaning wheel of the year
